A Student’s Guide to Search Engines

By Kelly Garbato The Internet consists of billions upon billions of individual files, located on millions of different web sites. Certainly, then, the Net is a veritable treasure trove of information for students, who routinely turn the Web for help with their coursework. Yet, all this knowledge is of little use if you dont know how to locate and access what you need, quickly and easily. Enter search engines! Search engines are essentially tools that allow you to search for information available on the Web using keywords and search terms. Rather than searching the Web itself, however, you are actually searching the engine’s database of files. Search engines are actually three separate tools in one. The spider is a program that crawls through the Web, moving from link to link, looking for new web pages. Once it finds new sites or files, it adds them to the search engine’s index. This index is a searchable database of all the information the spider has found on the Web. Some engines index every word in each document, while others select certain words (such as those occurring most often). The search engine itself is a piece of software that allows users to search the engine’s database. Clearly, an engine’s search is only as good as the index it’s searching. So, when you run a query using a search engine, you’re really only searching the engine’s index of what’s on the Web, as opposed to the entire Web. No one search engine is capable of indexing everything on the Web - there’s just too much information out there! Consequently, much of the information overlooked in search engine queries includes breaking news, documents, multimedia files, images, tables, and other data. Collectively, these types of resources are referred to as the deep or invisible Web. They’re buried deep in the Web and are invisible to search engines. Search engines usually feature advertisements in the form of paid results. Those sites that pay a fee may be included in your search results, usually at the very top of the list. Some engines group advertisers separately, for instance, on the side of the page. While search engines must clearly label all advertisers, they vary widely in their compliance with FTC rules. The method by which an engine determines how its search results will be presented to the user is called ranking. Early search engines, now called first generation search engines, used term ranking to organize their results. In term ranking, a result’s importance is determined by how often and where the search term appears in the document. Most of today’s search engines are much more sophisticated than this. These second generation search engines use a number of methods, sometimes in combination, to rank their results. In relevancy ranking, second generation engines use various algorithms to determine a document’s relevance to your search. This is by far the most popular ranking method, though engines often allow you to sort your results alphabetically or group them by site, source, and/or concept. In addition to ranking method, a number of other features distinguish one engine from another. You will encounter two basic types of search engines. Individual search engines are just that - individual engines which compile and search their own databases. Meta search engines, on the other hand, search several individual search engines at once. Meta engines do not maintain their own databases, but search those assembled by other engines. Meta engines present their search results in one of two ways. Using separate retrieval, they may group the results collected from each individual engine separately, so that you have a list of results from each engine. Separate retrieval often results in many redundant hits. Collated retrieval solves this problem by weeding out duplicate results obtained from different individual engines. Many engines allow you to choose between the two or even use collated retrieval while still grouping your results by search engine source. Search engines can be useful when conducting research, as long as you exercise caution. Always keep an eye out for paid results, and try to avoid engines that don’t disclose their advertisers. Search engines are a good idea when you have a very specific or obscure topic to research. Queries for broad or popular topics will return more results than is practical, and the information found may be of questionable quality. Thus, you should stick to academic databases unless you are having trouble finding enough information on your topic. Search engines can also be helpful if you’re looking for specific types of files, such as pictures. Meta engines are even more helpful in tackling those needle in a haystack searches, since they conduct several searches at once. For this reason, they are also good if you want to get an overview of what is out there, or if your topic is an uncommon one. Keep in mind, though, that meta searches will only retrieve the most relevant results from each engine, since they’re limited in the number of results they can uncover. Another casualty of meta searches is flexibility. Because you’re searching many engines at once, you’re only granted access to the search features that they all have in common. Finally, you should not rely on any one engine. Recall that each engine draws on a different database (or group of databases, as is the case with meta engines). Some cover portions of the deep web, while others go nowhere near it. Accordingly, you will get a different set of results depending on which engine you use. Rather than become familiar with only one, try out a number of them and pick a dozen or so that you like. While you should read each engine’s instructions before running a search, don’t try to memorize all the details, since they’re likely to change anyway! Search engines are an excellent means of locating otherwise impossible-to-find information online. There are many options available for the discriminating student researcher, so be selective and choose an engine that meets your unique needs! Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Symptoms

By Balaji B Urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria in one of the tracts through which urine passes. The infection can occur in the urethra, ureters, or the urinary bladder. Women are mostly affected due to UTI than men, but no specific reason has been found out till date. Men can also be affected by UTI with the infection causing greater level of discomfort. The urinary tract infection symptoms should be treated properly; else it could damage the kidneys. Plenty of medications are available in the market to cure the urinary tract infection symptoms. Proper diagnosis is vital, as these symptoms can also be caused by other problems such as infections of the vagina or vulva. In some cases, the urinary tract infection symptoms can resemble those of sexually transmitted diseases. Only a physician can make the distinction and make a correct diagnosis. This is important, because the right medications need to be prescribed to cure UTI symptoms. A strong urge to urinate without being able to delay is one of the urinary tract infection symptoms. A sharp pain or burning sensation in the urethra when the urine is released, is one of the other UTI symptoms. Releasing very little urine with a tinge of blood is one of the other symptoms. The urge to urinate recurring frequently is one of the other urinary tract infection symptoms. Experiencing soreness in the lower abdomen, back, or sides, the sensation of needing to pass urine but being unable to do so and nature of urine being cloudy and foul smelling are various kinds of urinary tract infection symptoms. Some of the urinary tract infection symptoms in newborns include fever or hypothermia (low temperature), poor feeding, and jaundice, and includes vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and poor feeding. Also the most common UTI symptoms are irritability, eating poorly, unexplained fever that doesn’t go away, loss of bowel control, loose bowels, and a change in urination pattern. 6 Ways to Generate 100 Free Mortgage Leads in 20 Days

By Hartley Pinn Could you use some free mortgage leads? If youre new to the mortgage business or a veteran loan officer who is a little short on cash, youll be happy to know there are several ways to generate free mortgage leads. Thats right. Even if youre dead broke, you can still generate good, quality, pre-qualified mortgage leads at no cost. Just keep reading and Ill share 6 powerful steps to generate free mortgage leads. 1) Create a powerful unique selling proposition (USP) If you dont currently have a unique selling proposition Find one. What makes you different from all the other mortgage lenders out there? What makes you better? Why should a prospect use you over a competitor? Answer these questions and you will have your unique selling proposition. This is an important first step because you will need a strong USP to generate free mortgage leads using the tips below. 2) Find joint venture partners Offer a referral fee of $100 to $1000 for any referral resulting in a funded loan. Offer this opportunity to all friends, family, neighbors, anyone and everyone. Can you call the past clients of a co-worker to generate referrals? If so, you could split the commissions generated from your efforts. 3) Give free seminars Arrange to present your USP to others to produce referrals. Here are some ideas: 1) Contact the sales manager at real estate offices to present your USP at a realtor sales meeting 2) Contact human resource managers. Give a free seminar to employees of a company. 3) Present your USP to CPAs or financial planners to create referral relationships. 4) Contact divorce attorneys and offer your services to their clients. 5) Contact relocation companies Do you need some ideas for how to successfully approach these professional? If so, visit the following web page and download three sample approach letters: http://www.Mortgage-Leads-Generator.com/a/refiletter.htm 4) Write Articles Write articles about mortgage products, rates, no closing cost loans or no money down financing. Then submit your articles to article directories with your contact information at the end of the article. Here are the article directories I recommend: About: http://sbinformation.about.com/library/blsubmission.htm ezinearticles.com goarticles.com articledashboard.com searchwarp.com contentdesk.com isnare.com buzzle.com ideamarketers.com businessknowhow.com articlesphere.com amazines.com web-source.net/syndicator_submit.htm Try to include the following elements in your articles: 1) Useful information a must! 2) A text link to your site. 3) A lead generating offer relating to the subject mater in your article. Provide a link to a web page on your site where the reader can get a complementary special report or something else of value. If you submit just two articles a week to the sites listed above, after one year you would have 100 articles all over the internet. If you publish useful information, these 100 articles could easily generate hundreds if not thousands of free mortgage leads daily. 5) Start your direct mail campaign Borrow money from a friend or family member and start a mail campaign. Use a credit card or borrow a credit card to get started. If you borrow money or a credit card, offer that person a split of the commissions generated from the project. 6) Cross sell Once you get a client using one of the 5 tips above, impress them with your extraordinary customer service skills and generate a testimonial. Use that testimonial to create a referral relationship with: * HR manager at their work * Listing real estate agent and that agents entire office * Selling real estate agents and that agents entire office * CPA * Financial planner * Insurance agent * The seller of the home on a purchase transaction * Title Company * Real estate appraiser * Neighbors There you have it. Pots of Marriage Advice

By Pat Strawbridge Thanksgiving is the time when people often put the big pot in the little one as the old saying goes. Unexpected guests, too many social obligations, drain on finances and in-laws may cause a marriage partner to become a seething caldron. When marriage partners begin to boil, emotionally, their feelings begin to affect all areas of their relationship. Before a couple realizes what is happening, divorce begins to stew in the marriage pot. When married couples desire success, they will seek many ways to reduce the heat of their marriage pots. One way is to seek advice from role models like pastor, parents or respected friends. Ask them how they overcome heated arguments in marriage. Turn down the heat around the marriage stew pot by talking and listening in a joint decision-making process. Discuss how much money that can be used for the holidays. Use your God-given creativity to stay within the allotted amount. Sometimes less money in the pot can bring about a more meaning experience. Consider what brought you together in the first place. Recall the mixture of love, trust and faithfulness that you have placed in the marital pot. Determine if you want a permanent marriage. Add your prayers to God to the boiling pot. Seek to become the best mate that you can by giving some sacrificial time. Even during the holidays, take the pressure off of the marriage pot with some time to yourselves. Forgo a social obligation; send the kids to grandmas house. (Shell love having them for only 4-5 hours.) Turn off the telephones, televisions and computers. Reduce the lighting in the house and play some romantic music. Light scented candles. (Use caution because you dont want a fire spoiling your time together.) Start with a personal chore like brushing her hair or clipping his toenails. Take a cozy bath or shower and towel off each other. Massage each other with a soothing vitamin E cream or oil. Remember your wedding vows, the fun times and things that has personal meaning. A pot of sacrificial time will cover a multitude of mistakes in a marriage stew. After nearly 50 years of marriage, this pot of advice has been proved to be successful for us. During the holidays couples should put all their problems into a big pot and seek ways to reduce the heat of the marriage pressure cooker. After open discussion, those who strive for a successful marriage are challenged to place their differences in a smaller pot on the back burner and cut off the heat. When their pot of marriage is completed, they can say that they successfully served a marriage dish that lasted until the death of one of the spouses or one that has lasted into eternity. Pat Strawbridge is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and the Mississippi University for Women and has done postgraduate work at University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Home Economics with emphasis in family relations. She and her husband, Drennon, live in Cleveland, TN near their son, Mike and his wife, Janice, and two grandsons Scott and Will. Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction to Hydroponics Gardening for Beginners (Part 12) H2O2

By John R. Haughton Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is a water molecule with an extra atom of Oxygen attached (2H2O + O2 = 2H2O2). This extra Oxygen atom is quite easily detached from the water molecule and eagerly combines with any suitable substance that has the room for it. For example it will attack organic blood cells. Any chemists shop will sell you some concentrated 35% Hydrogen Peroxide, which may be diluted with water to give a 3% solution for human use. This diluted solution is good for treating minor cuts and scrapes etc. It is also used for softening ear wax. It works by oxidising the chemical parts that are presenting as having a free space for the Oxygen atom. When H2O2 comes in contact with these impurities it will give a reaction which causes it to fizz. This fizzing is the Oxygen atoms coming out of their bond with the water molecules and bubbling out of the solution. As gardeners, we can use this eagerness to break its bond to help keep our plants free from everyday pests. In the same way as old organic blood cells are attacked and consumed by the fizzing action of the peroxide, so will any bacteria and small insects be destroyed by a solution of up to 5% H2O2. At this strength it is safe for human skin but lethal to most bugs. Mix up the following for a weekly preventative spray: Add to 1Litre of Water: 30ml of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide 20 ml of Alcohol (Old style mouth wash works well) 2ml of wetting agent (Washing up liquid will do) Use this mixture as a foliar spray to keep your plants healthy and free from bugs. Another advantage of the Peroxide breaking down is that it releases free Oxygen into the area. So, if you were to add some to your nutrient tank, the dissolved Oxygen being released around the root system not only kills any bad root material and bacteria, but also oxygenates the roots with the excess Oxygen produced. Plants can easily cope with a 5% H2O2 solution and because the mixture reduces to water in a short space of time, the dilutions are not that critical. For this reason, it also makes a great disinfectant for plant pots, greenhouses and grow-rooms. It may be used at 10% for these jobs, but make sure to only use it if the area is plant free. A really great advantage is that you do not have to rinse it away after use because it will revert to water on its own. Click the link to see how NASA is planning to use this sanitizing Hydrogen Peroxide system. http://www.primidi.com/2005/08/29.html A partner in a thriving retail hydroponics supply business, Rickie Haughton is the owner of http://www.hydroponics-gardening-information.com Your First Choice For Hydroponics Gardening Information, the Hydroponics-Gardening-Information website is packed with good content about all aspects of hydroponics gardening and offers a free Hydroponics Gardening Information Club membership to all subscribers. MBA Applications and Your Application Essay

By Thomas Suh Ivy League admission officials revealed that the best chance of a candidate to get accepted lies in his application essay. That is why your purpose in writing your MBA essay should be similar to the purpose of a college admission essay. Years back, weren’t you thinking that your goal was to make your dream university think that you’re a worthy student to walk through its halls? The same goes for the MBA application. Double the effort you exerted in writing your college application essay but think along the same lines. Below are reasons why MBA essays are not resumes or a reiteration of your grades and accomplishments. Limited space is allotted for MBA application essays, so there is simply no space for unnecessary details. Skills and academic excellence are expected and commonplace in the competition. After all, no one in his right mind will aspire for an MBA if his brain dried out in college or in writing his college application essay. Your SAT scores and excellent academic records might have helped to get you in your dream college. Collegiate achievements undoubtedly have had a role to play in getting you a good job. But members of an MBA admission board are not to be steam-rolled by grades and professional history alone. If you’re an overachiever, you are likely just one of the many overachievers trying to get into the same MBA program. You all have good academic records and professional accomplishments but impressive resumes don’t really cut it in for the admissions board. There is no way to get accepted in an MBA program without distinguishing yourself from other applicants except in an MBA essay. So weeding out information like these is not only wise but practical. Similar to how a college admission essay is evaluated, MBA admission boards evaluate MBA essays for traits and non-academic qualities of the candidates. Obviously, personality is not measured in grades. The members of the board want ambition, honesty, maturity, diplomacy, and other traits in their students. They evaluate inter and intra-personal strengths in their potential students. They want dynamism and enthusiasm — individuals who have interests outside the academe and actually experienced what it’s like to live (if you want to be poetic about it). If you recall, your high school adviser gave you the same advice regarding your jargon habit and verbose essay. Do not repeat the same mistakes in your MBA essay. Flamboyant words take up too much space and a highly-technical language hides your personality which defeats the purpose of your MBA essay. You might be surprised but Ivy League admission officials actually claim that the best essays they’ve read (read: those they accepted) often talks about a key memory, an important experience, a hobby - things the authors felt passionate about. The topics seem like the kinds people use in writing a college admission essay but they are highly effective for MBA application essays. The two are similar to each other although at varying levels. A college admission essay shows universities what a student wants to achieve and how they are influenced by the people around them. The same goes for the MBA; the board wants to see how you’ve matured because of your experiences. They are not interested in your high marks but how you achieved them. Or more likely, how you managed to have a life while performing excellently in academics. So take a deep breath and erase all resume info in your MBA essay. After all, the resume is already part of your application. Who Will Receive the Mark of the Beast?

By Christine Bettridge Mark of the beast, the man and his number 666, is definitely on the top of the most scary, misunderstood number in history. Most of the world associates the number with the devil. Some of the so called end time preachers would like to scare you into thinking this is something to worry about however it does not have to. I remember standing in a grocery line when I was younger and the womans change was $6.66. She refused it and walked out. Was this some force of darkness or just a coincidence? Most believe that if you receive this mark you will be unable to buy or sell. The mark will be placed on the forehead or on the right hand and has been associated with the end of times or end of the world. Is a mark always a bad thing? Many people have claimed when you play the old albums (33rpms) of Led Zeppelin and other rock groups you can here subliminal messages concerning this man and his number. Others are worried that the bar codes on products that we buy have to do with the mark of the beast as well as the medical implant chips that have been in use for years. They have now come up with the idea to put the implants in our children to help keep track of them. Are we as Americans trying to scare ourselves into an early grave or is this the fault of scandalous preachers? This mark of the beast is something that our culture has wondered about for years. Who was this mark of the beast intended for? What did the mark of the beast mean to first century Christians? Since it was them the book of Revelation was specifically written to then we should ask them what it means. If we could take a trip in time and tell them that these micro chips and bar codes refer to the beast I think they would be quite perplexed since they didn’t exist in the first century. So then if it doesn’t have anything to do with us then what does it mean? You can conclude from all of this that whatever it meant to them, (first century Christians), it still means the same thing today. Let’s take a look at marks and how they were used then. When Cain killed his brother he was worried that others would try to kill him so God placed a mark on Cain so that people would know to leave him alone. We do not know for sure who the others were at this point so this cannot be answered. Genesis 4:15. Even though this question cannot be answered it still shows that God placed this mark on him. Another example of a mark is found in Ezekiel 9:1-6 which talks about God telling the six men to slay all of the wicked people. The only ones that were spared are the ones that had the mark. God being gracious to the people who were faithful. So a mark on someones forehead does not necessarily mean a bad thing. So then who in the first century received the Mark of the Beast and why? Economic sanctions were a way to get people to do what the Roman Empire wanted them to do. Christians, Jews, Romans and all citizens had to pay homage to Caesar. So to not be able to buy or sell would create a hardship for any of them. Roman Emperors thought of themselves as divine, the emperors claimed equality with God. Domitian wanted them to treat them as if they were God and to be called Lord and God. They placed abominations in the temple. In other words they erected statues of themselves to be placed in the temples for the people to worship and burn incense. When they did not they sometimes punished them with economic sanctions. Some were banned from the city, just as the Apostle John was where he wrote the book of Revelation. William Barclay and his commentary on the book of Revelation show the certificate and it was a certificate to be obtained annually. The request runs: To those who have been appointed to preside over the sacrifices, from Inares Akeus, from the village of Theoxenis, together with his children Aias and Hera, who reside in the village of Theadelphia. We have always sacrificed to the gods, and now, in your presence, according to the regulations, we have sacrificed and offered libations, and tasted the sacred things, and we ask you to give us a certification that we have done so, May you fare well. The certificate runs: We, the representatives of the emperor, Serenos and Herma, have seen you sacrificing. It should be noted that if Roman citizens or Jews refused to pay homage it sometimes would be overlooked. If Christians didnt pay their homage to Caesar they sometimes were tortured first and then put to death. For a while Christians got away with it because they were thought of as just another sect of the Jews. However, the more the Christians stood up for Christ the worse the conditions and persecutions got. These certificates meant that they have obeyed the customs and were able to take this to the store with them as proof of being able to buy or sell. However as you see in the book of Revelation that some refused and continued with hope that God would avenge their blood. As for today no one will have to worry about the Mark of the Beast as it has no importance to us. Rome fell and it was Gods ultimate plan. And the book of Revelation is a book of hope for first century Christians and lets us know that we are safe with God. We will not have to go through the persecutions as they did but we will all have trials and struggles of our own to overcome. In fact its not a question if God is going to win but rather how many Christians He will take with him to heaven. One person speaks a falsehood, a hundred repeat it as fact, and soon it becomes a truth.. NSW Test and Tag Regulations

By Gavin Grech The electrical test and tag legislation in NSW has recently changed. On Friday 28 April 2006 Workcover NSW published the Occupational Health and Safety Amendment (Electrical Equipment) Regulation 2006 to amends the previous legislative contained in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001. This amending regulation now outlines working environments where testing and tagging of electrical equipment is required. Clause 64 (2)(a2) 1 all electrical articles that are used in construction work are regularly inspected, tested and maintained by a competent person to ensure they are safe for use if the articles are supplied with electricity through an electrical outlet socket Clause 64 (2)(a3) 1 all electrical articles that are supplied with electricity through an electrical outlet socket that are at a place of work where the safe operation of the electrical article could be affected by a hostile operating environment are regularly inspected, tested and maintained by a competent person to ensure they are safe for use Clause 64 (3) 1 In this clause, hostile operating environment means an operating environment at a place of work where an electrical article is in its normal use subjected to operating conditions that are likely to result in damage to the article, and, for example, includes an operating environment that may: (a) cause mechanical damage to the article, or (b) expose the article to moisture, heat, vibration, corrosive substances or dust that is likely to result in damage to the article. Many people interpret this as all plug-in electrical equipment must be inspected, tested and tagged. This is not the case, some plug-in electrical equipment present as a low risk and will not need such a stringent testing procedure. A risk assessment must be carried out on electrical equipment that is not placed in a hostile working environment. Once the risk assessment is carried out a range of control measures to manage the safe operation of these electrical appliances can be used. The Workcover NSW publication entitled Electrical Equipment Risk Assessment outlines the procedure to undertake a risk assessment. All electrical equipment in hostile environments must be tested and tagged by a competent person. A competent person is someone who has acquired the knowledge and skill to perform the task. This knowledge can be obtained through training, qualification or experience. All tests must be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Australian and New Zealand standard AS/NZ 3760: 2003. All unsafe appliances must be repaired, replaced or permanently removed from use. Clause 65(1)1 An employer must ensure that a record is made and kept of all inspections and tests made and maintenance carried out on electrical articles and electrical installations required by this Part. The persons who performed the test, the date on which the test was preformed, the date of the next test, and the outcome of the test must all be recorded. It is also up to the employer, as the person authorizing the work, to make sure that the testing and tagging program is adequate for the needs of the workplace. Testing Construction Electrical Equipment Due to the hazardous nature of construction work regular testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be carried out in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Work Cover NSW Code of Practice Electrical practices for construction Clause 14.12 Ensure that all flexible extension cords, portable tools and electrical plant supplied at a voltage above 32 volts (extra low voltage) are inspected, tested and tagged as per Clause 14.7 and 14.8 by a licensed electrician at regular monthly intervals or at regular 3 monthly intervals for single unit dwelling house sites. Record details of the inspections and tests in a book kept on site or at the owners premises. All electrical equipment including those keep in sheds and site offices must be tested and tagged in accordance to the Code of Practice Electrical practices for construction and a durable non metallic tag must be applied. A different colour tag must be used for each month as follows: January - Red February - Blue March - Orange April - Green May - White June - Yellow July - Blue August - Green September - Red October - Yellow November - Orange December White The tag must include the date of the inspection, the plant number or inspection number of the item inspected, the name of the testing company. Advice to Employees All workplace should be performing risk assessment on electrical equipment. And if it is found that the electrical equipment is placed into a hostile environment, they shall be tested and tagged in accordance to AS/NZ 3760: 2003. If this is not the case in your workplace, you as an employee, should approach your employer and request that this be done as soon as possible. If it is not done, then the employer is breaching his/her duty under Clause 641.
